CHICAGO (May 15, 2008) - Chicago-based Bankers Life and Casualty Company, a national life and health insurer, has been named the Corporate Honoree at the 21st Annual Alzheimer's Association Rita Hayworth Gala for their support of the Association through their annual Forget Me Not Days fundraiser.
"Bankers Life has organized Forget Me Not Days over the past six years, contributing more than $1.1 million since 2003 to support both national and local efforts," said Harry Johns, President and CEO of the Alzheimer's Association. "The dedication of their employees and agents to support our mission and raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease in their local communities is making a significant difference for people who are directly affected by the disease and their families."
Since 2003, each May Bankers employees and agents take to the streets of Chicago and other locations across the U.S. to raise awareness of and help fight Alzheimer's disease. Clad in distinctive green gardening aprons, volunteers collect donations to benefit their local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and as a thank you, hand contributors packet of forget-me-not seeds to plant in honor of the 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease.
"It's an honor to receive this year's Corporate Honoree award," said Scott Perry, President of Bankers. "Our fight against Alzheimer's disease is personal, as many of the people facing Alzheimer's are our customers. Every day our agents are visiting their homes, and our corporate employees are talking to their families and their caregivers. We see firsthand the devastating effects that this disease has on patients and their loved ones, and we are committed to doing what we can to support the Alzheimer's Association in fighting this disease and helping to give something back to our customers and our communities."
Six years ago, the first Forget Me Not Days was held in seven cities. This year's event - held on May 16 - will include nearly a thousand volunteers in more than 120 communities across the country.
"Bankers is proud to be a sponsor of the Alzheimer's Association and to do our part to support the remarkable work they do to advance research and provide patient and caregiver support," said Perry. "We're deeply honored to be recognized for the contribution we make to this great cause."
